Unless you can give me a link to the direct quote where it says it's free, I'm going to take the link down.
well, it might be illegal 'cause u have to download it from IPB's server , but they no longer allow it , u were right to take the link out. anyway i got a legal IPB 2.0.0 because i downloaded direct from their site since fall 2004, so is that ok if i use it on x10hosting :happysad:???

I'm going to have to say no on this one. As far as I know, no version of IPB is legal to use for free. If you can provide me with an actual web page, or get explicit permission from the IPB company (or an x10 administrator) then you can.

i did ask them about that and they said as long as i download it from their site before 2005 that means before it licensed , it is legally and accually it's a 2.0.0 final umlimited trial :
If anyone want to know it is true or not just contact their sale department :

Actually youre allowed to use it if you downloaded the IPB 2.0 Unlimited Trial from when IPB offered the download on there site. But if you did not download it from there site, then that would be illegal to use.

Any whom, Mybb is the next best bulletin board system. ;) It looks a lot better compared to Phpbb.

probably not

I'm uncertain about free forum softwares that are still available. I have one of the legal trials of IPB 2.0, so I guess that's the best. Other than that, I'd say to go with IPB 1.3, because it's got more features than phpBB. Some advice from my experiences running forums... I wouldn't suggest starting a forum until you have a strong website with sufficient traffic. Forum management is more trouble than its worth when you don't have existing traffic. I think it'd probably be more effective to start a website as a blog, allowing users to post comments.

From my experience (which isn't great), i prefer IPB.
Although it is very good, there are many very good forum softwares available free. So if youve got money to spend i would go for IPB.

well with IPB's recent price exploding, I would prefer vBulletin, also I like vBulletin's style better anyway

I personally prefer free forum software. Lately I've been using mybb but before mybb I used phpbb.

I've always liked phpbb...I started using it a long time ago (yes, I chose it over IPB even when IPB was free) and am still using it today. The user community for it is *huge* which means lots of support from the community, the codebase is (relatively) clean, so it's easy to write plugins for it, and the template system saves a lot of time when coding new plugins and editing skins.

Demo : create a forum

in the free area, i'd have to say PHPBB or Punbb (punbb is easy to integrate into other things).

as for paid software, IPB is the way to go
