How can I get Google and search engines to exclude a specific file and directory?

How can I get Google and other search engines not to index this particular file?
http://<website_URL>wp/wp-content/uploads/kalins-pdf/singles/.pdf (Only that PDF file and still allow the whole directory to still be indexed by Google and other search engines?)

I also don't want Google and other search engines to index a particular directory on the server i.e.
http://<website_URL>/confidential/documents

You can hide certain files from search engines by using robots.txt.
