I would have to say that I prefer phpBB because, personally I have had experience with this program.

I wouldn't know what to say for advantages and disadvantages of the forum, so thats really it.

disadvantages of phpbb are:
have to manually add modes unless you use a really buggy mod installer
crappy admin panel
no support
and to slow

advantages:
an rpg mod

smf disadvantages:
no rpg mod but there is one in the making
need to use PHP my admin to restore a database(no big deal its not to often u need to do that any way)

advantages
fast
really good community
tiny portal mod
built in mod installer

so id go for SMF.

PHPBB is bad since most hackers out their target it like hell and l find the program overall bad where as SMF is fast, efficient and very easy to modify :D

Can you tell me what features/or control it has that SMF doesn't. Just thought I would ask.:coolugh:

I should have defined that much better. That's what I get for typing a quick response.

I meant that I find myBB easier to control in the admin section. Last time I used smf (which was a while ago, so it may have improved), I found it harder to use.

dest581, I just checked out the MyBB website and I think I might try it. I find phpBB's admin section frustrating at times. :biggthump

MyBB or SMF, phpBB is poorly written.

MyBB dosnt have that many mods or themes for it so id look into both.

Yes there are some very nice additions and improvements. It beats phpbb hands down, and for that matter most of the rest as far as I'm concerned.

SMF all the way. More options, more freedom, better layout, free hosters and stuff, much much better. I have an SMF from SMF4Free which is the best possible host of all times.

Simple Machines Forum (SMF) Totally. I just recently converted from phpBB to SMF, and I can tell you that SMF is so much better than phpBB. Here is a comparison of phpBB (v2.0.21) and SMF (v1.1 RC3):

SMF:
* Extremely Easy-to-use (and well-laidout) Admin Area
* Wide range of options to customise your board
* Extensive Member Permissions Management
* Very easy to install MODs (one click upload, and one click install)
- A large selection of MODs
- A large number of themes to choose from (Dilber MC is a very good one)
* Very secure password protection (Sha-1 Hashing - version 1.1+)
* Ability to optimise database tables
* Ability to scan for forum errors
* Extensive Forum Error and Moderator Log
* Built-in "News" Section
* Built-in Calender
* Ability to specify login time at login prompt
* Built-in forum statistics
* Ability to create "Child" boards
* Ability to add attachments to posts
- Excellent Support/Community

The list goes on...

phpBB:
* Relatively Easy-to-use Admin Area
* Little options available to customise your board
* Member Permissions Management available
* VERY HARD to install MODs (all done manually - unless you have the EasyMOD installed which I heard was really buggy)
- A large selection of MODs
- A large number of themes to choose from
* Ordinary Password protection
* NOT able to optimise database tables
* NOT able to scan for forum errors
* NO Forum Error and Moderator Log (that I can find)
* NO Built-in "News" Section
* NO Built-in Calender
* NOT able to specify login time at login prompt
* NO Built-in forum statistics
* NOT able to create "Child" boards
* NOT able to add attachments to posts
- Excellent Support/Community

In particular, pay attention to the asterisk* entries - they are the main differences!

Even after briefly looking at other boards such as:
- Aterr
- Beehive Forum
- Bmforum
- IceBB
- MercuryBoard
- MiniBB
- Monkey Boards
- MwForum
- PunBB
- Quicksilver Forums
- Sylphagora
- Ultimate PHP Board
- UseBB
- Vanilla (forum)
- XennoBB

They seem n00b compared to SMF, let alone phpBB (however, I would recommend phpBB AFTER SMF). Hope this helps!!! :)

phpBB is free, can be installed in fantastico.

I believe that I use phpBB as, for me I find it easier to use. However it might be due to the fact that I used phpBB from the start, and when I tried the others, I just did not get the hang of them.

I would have to say that while I have been using phpBB , there are a few things that is annoying within phpBB, such as no quick reply box, where as in others such as vBullliten there is, hence how I am writing this post.

However, something that is eaisly availble for phpBB is the millions of themes that you can get for the forum. I am sure you can get plenty for SMF etc, but I find it easier to use phpBB etc.

I might go and have a look over SMF again or just to get the feel of what they are like, then perhaps decided between the two which is easier to use.

So ther eoyu have it ladies and gents, that is my oppinion of the two different forums.

Regards,
Zenax

I prefer SMF mainly because I used to use YaBBSE a few years ago. SMF also has a better support forum.
