I read around on the forums that there are people that think that Nortorn AV is the best anti virus software ... but in my opinion is only a waste of resources ( great waste of resources). I 'm curius to know what Av do u think is the best and what are u using right now .

I'm using nod32 that has a good heuristic engine but i'd like to try the new version of kaspersky that impements and heuristc engine...heuristic in my opinion is a very importante feature , because for an hacker is very easy to modify a file , this trick can work against signatures but not against heuristic...

I'm on linux, and haven't experienced any viruses ever. However, I would think that not using IE (activeX is a security risk) having a good firewall (software and/or hardware) and generally being careful online are enough to avoid viruses. If you really need AV, there are some free ones available like AVG and ClamAV.

AVG is the best free one I know. If you want the best pay one, I'd have to say ZoneAlarm. I get Symantec Security Suite for free from my ISP, and I use it and have managed to stop the resource hogging updater from hogging resources (opening 9 instances of an update program anyone?!). It updates just like McAfee does, needing very little RAM.

Seeing as how I'm cheap and never get viruses to begin with, I have AVG 7.5 just in case.

On Linux I don't have a anti-virus program.
On Windows I use AVG and Threatfire.

I use ZoneAlarm as well. I honestly couldn't imagine using the Internet without it switched on, that's how good it is. That, and I can use it to ban Windows Genuine Advantage from ever running again

The best currently is AVG because it is free and offers a lot of great (non resource hogging) serivices.

I use quick heal total security. Its reliable and lightweight. It doesnt waste resources like the Norton Antivirus.

I currently testing out 3 different types of free antivirus software...

AVG , avast and antivir so far to say who detect the best will be antivir... this is because of its fast weekly updates can range from 2 to 3 updates per day... It finds large range of supports of virus and allow me to understand what am I infected with. It also has much lower false alarm.

Avast give me several bad impression I always though the more engine they have to support mail, web , p2p is better but then the resources is so high and sometimes lag the computer, the first bad impression was unable to detect 2 to three trojans which I manually found it without avast help. same for avg.

Currently antivir is free and already sufficiently strong and well build with their updates. Therefore I hope avast and avg can work harder.

I have had a linux system for almost two years now and I havent come across any viruses yet. Nobody has spend $400 bucks for a bare bone computer and purchase an anti-virus program plus a subscription to protect it. It's unreal...

I think linux flavours are the future in terms of personal computing and the protection of information.

I think AVG is best. It's free and I never get viruses even though I download tons of dodgy freeware!

But zone alarm is a firewall ... isn't it?
ZoneAlarm is a firewall, but the software is also a Security Suite as well, much like how McAfee, Symantec and Computer Associates have. Check the ZoneAlarm website and see for yourself :)

I only use Norton, so I can't really tell if something is better. But when the program opens, it slows my computer down, A LOT. Hopefully I'll get one that won't stress the computer as much.

i have never had a virus since i had avast installed. its my favorite. does not consume alot of memory, auto updates itself, easy to use GUI, great support.

imo norton av is not really good. i used it once and man did it eat up alot of my systems reasources. and my time having it i got 5 viruses and it didnt detect them.

amen to linux! i love linux and wish i could keep it. but i switched back to windows xp because i couldnt play my favorite games...

chevvok, did you try using Wine? It's an emulator for Linux which should let you run most Windows executables on Linux. Also, most Unreal Engine games are capable of cross-platforming across OSes (I know that Unreal Tournament '99 was released for Linux and Mac). I have Virtual PC too, I may download a Linux distribution and try it out in there; if I like it, I'll try a tri-boot - Windows 95, Linux AND Windows XP

Back on topic, I agree Norton sucks. Basically you're paying for a paperweight; Norton probably couldn't even detect a virus deleting IT. You're much better off with ZoneAlarm, it monitors everything every program, service etc does and if it might be a problem (e.g. something tries to connect to the internet or start a process), it'll stop the offending executable and ask you what to do with it. Add to that IM/IRC filtering and encryption, and email filters, and you've got a great anti-virus software.
