I read somewhere that you need to wait up to 24 hours after you create the account in order to access. When I first signed up, I uploaded files right away, but then it started erroring out. Waiting the 24 hours resolved the issue and i was able to do cPanel, create a db and upload files

I've used FileZilla to upload my files. the directory I use is '/public_html' (without the quotes). You may want to test with a regular FTP client like FileZilla just to see what settings you want (or need)
