I tried updating MX records for Google Apps, but they still don't work as per the announcement made last month. Am I able to setup Google Apps email successfully by only changing CNAME records, or do my MX records have to be changed as well in order for email to arrive succesfully at my domain...

If you can't access the server, you can't access your files, can you? Keep to the TOS - it's there for a reason. Be grateful for the superb free hosting offering X10 has. Breaking the TOS on X10 free hosting is in my opinion far worse than on paid - the one way you can show gratitude to X10...
