WinSCP works with FTP and has a folder sync function - I don't know Mercurial but if it can 'push' to a local directory, problem solved.

I found it to be a lot easier to use a 3rd party solution like CloudFlare - especially as it means if I wipe my VPS, I can not only easily redirect web traffic to my work VPS node, but also I don't lose any emails as DNS stays up!
