on the other hand (related to .htaccess file, but unrelated to the problem experienced above), the .htaccess file doesn't show up in the file manager. I'm away from my own laptop, so I'm stuck using the file manager instead of ftp... anyway to fix the problem?

Not sure if you still need to back up... but you could go into the file manager, go to your home directory, select public_html folder and click on "compress" on the top right menu. later you can "extract" the file under the home directory. haven't tested that out yet, but logistically it should...
