    Windows services broken

no known dial-a-fix for vista or 7. your boot cd may allow some sort of repair. also, you might have to try to start services manually and watch the logs and dependencies to hack out your solution. you may even have to re-register some dll's using regsvr32. sorry i can't help any more than that.

    Windows services broken

Do you use XP? These are for XP only: This .reg file would set default services back to their original settings. Also, I would suggest finding "Dial-a-Fix".

Share your opinion about ubuntu 10.10

had the in-place distro upgrade since alpha. no problems except with an update or two, but further updates resolved the issue. I see no difference first hand from 10.04 to 10.10, but then again i dont have a touch screen either.

    Excel; some sort of licensing?

When you say "slight changes" do you mean to the actual code? I think you can lock and hide the code. although password protecting your code could easily be cracked. There is such a thing as "obfuscating" your code.... and also such a thing as compiling your workbooks into EXE. (although...

    Virus Alerts

@v4xde, running linux at home now... for XP you can consider, pctools.com's firewall. may have to set firewall to advanced/manual mode and hack around with settings. really i usually end up just using xp's built in firewall, but i have used pctool's firewall happily in the past.

Bringing back to life an old Pentium III

boot a livecd of slitaz for speed. it will be faster than xubuntu, but i do like xubuntu. i have read than xubuntu's version of xfce actually uses slightly more memory than gnome, only because they modified it to have some gnome compatibilities -- otherwise xfce should be smaller and faster.

possibly reset (clear) all your firewall settings and start fresh... I'm unsure if zone alarm is better than it was about 4 years back, but due to massive fails upon uninstalling, i added it to my "i dont like it" list.

Does anybody know a good tutorial for installing Ubuntu on a PC with Windows 7?

if you just want to play with ubuntu (or any other OS), just run it under virtualbox. You can get a 4GB thumbdrive for $13 measly bucks at your local Big Lots if you have one and install it there as "slacker_" suggested in reply #20.
