how to upload joomla over the ftp? and where i must place it? under the www folder or other folders? sorry for my bad english

help me please.. i try to upload index.php over the ftp using smart ftp, i dont no where i place it in www folder,, and my web dosn't change with the new one can somebody tell me why??? so please help me,,cause i'm newbie sorry for my bad english
