Why doesn't my forum (nor Joomla) send registration emails nor password reset emails (no emails at all)? what must I do? what must I configurate?

I'm trying to install SMF forum and Joomla, but when I get to the part where I must write the host (it's stoli right?) MySQL databae password, username and name from the database, I proceed and I get the error "Invalid Username and/or password" what's the problem
