Akismet plugin for Wordpress not working

When I activate the Akismet plug-in for my Wordpress blog, it says that it can't find the server:

There was a problem connecting to the Akismet server. Please check your server configuration.

I currently have the v2, Intermediate PHP Configuration.

Can someone please help me out? Thanks!

What is it trying to connect for?

To 'validate' messages against their antispam database. Unless you're running a hugely successful blog (then you wouldn't be hosted here) akistmet can disabled with no dire effects whatsoever
