This is what they say
Here is yet another study underlining the fact that moderate drinking is good for the heart - with wine drinkers showing the most significant reduction in cardiac risk.
The study, by researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) was conducted with over 7,500 people aged between 45 and 64.
Wine drinkers as a sub-sect came up trumps in the 10-year study when compared to all other three groups under the scanner - non-drinkers, other drinkers and heavy drinkers.
Researchers found that six percent began moderate alcohol consumption (a drink per day or fewer for women and two drinks per day or fewer for men) during the follow-up period.
After four years of follow-up, new moderate drinkers had a 38 lower chance of developing cardiovascular disease than did their non-drinking counterparts.
Even after adjusting for physical activity, body mass index, demographic and cardiac risk factors, this difference persisted.
Drinkers of other types of alcohol also had an advantage over non-drinkers, but the difference did not reach statistical significance.
"The findings suggest that, for carefully selected individuals, a heart healthy diet may include limited alcohol consumption even among individuals who have not included alcohol previously," said Dana E King of MUSC.
Findings of the study have been have been published in the latest issue of The American Journal of Medicine.
