Say you there is a monthly fee for your membership to a website.
Is using a credit card the only way pay automatically or can paypal and other services do this as well?

I suppose it depends on the website. You should be able to do monthly subscriptions/payments to other websites using other methods besides a Credit card since it is after all, just another form of payment.

If you want to build a website that works on a subscription basis, PayPal offers recurring billing for subscriptions and memberships, and there are other services that are dedicated to recurring billing, like Recurly. Building your own system around a traditional payment gateway like Authorize.net is great for single payments, but it starts to get really complicated for recurring billing (handling cancellations and so forth).
