I used to have AVG Free installed, but I was not totally satisfied, but now I am using NOD32 and it seems to be just perfect, keeps my system clean and protects it from any threats, and for spyware I use Spysweeper from Webroot.

I used AVG for 2 years when someday... it refused to start up.
after reinstalling it. I scanned my HD, only to find it had corrupted all my softwares and games while trying to repair them.

I found avast uses Virus Recovery Database (VRDB) generator.
It stores a fingerprint of files so that its easy for it to repair files in case of a virus.

I use Active Virus Shield from AOL.
It uses the Kaspersky Virus Database... and IMHO It was the best free AV out

I have used Avast forever, it seems, and I have never had problems. I don't even use a Spyware scanner - avast catches everything for me. It updates automatically, it looks cool with all the skins I have downloaded and made, it does not catch anything in my games (killing games is Norton's and AVG's job), and it has many more options on what to do with the viruses. On top of that, the boot time scan is the most USEFUL utility I've ever heard of. I scan about once a week with it while I sleep and I set my computer to shut off in 2 hours.

My only complaint is that it seems to have trouble detecting viruses in RAR archives. That is not a problem though - it catches them upon extraction before they do anything.

I've used Avast, AVG, NOD32, and Norton at some point or another (not at the same time), and IMHO AVG is the best.

Avast was just annoying and a resource hog

NOD32 I never got to work correctly (it wasn't neccesarily the "legal" copy)

Norton SUCKS. It ruins computers

I use AVG purely because it's one of the only well known Virus Detectors that I have found to work well.

Avast sets off the annoying siren every 30 seconds just because you have a file on your computer ending in .exe or .zip.

Norton is one of those providers that are good but just don't provide a good enough service for the price they charge.

AVG is one of the best I have found. It automaticly sorts out any viruses, spyware etc. and can run in the background so when it does the automatic scan when you first logon to your computer you don't actually notice that it's happening which is very useful.

In Conclusion i think that AVG is the best purely because it is good and doesn't cost too much for the service it provides.

AVG Free - I don't encounter viruses often, so I just need basic protection that isn't hard on resources

I was on AVG once then Brontok got past it so I switched to Avast. Catches them damn little bugs now. :D
Edit:
Impressive. 20 personnel for a mostly free service. :)

i used to use norton and i heard from friends that it really slows the computer down. and true enough, it did. so i stopped paying for norton subscriptions (yes, i bought the yearly subscriptions) and used the free AVG edition. it's working well. :)
