I was recently, purely out of curiosity, searching for some music visualization software, something that would be better than the plug-in used on Windows Media Player. I came across Beatharness and I have to say it's one of the best pieces of software I've found in ages 
I think it was originally a plug-in for Winamp but is now available as a standalone. You can load your own images and videos so that they are morphed on the screen as the software reacts to the music, whether it's from the stereo mix or from a microphone input!
You can get it free here: http://www.beatharness.com (although the free version has a reminder to donate every 5mins or so)
There are some other free VJ software out there such as Noise Cradle, but I haven't been able to get it to work yet...
