I personally like 3D Studio Max the best. I picked up on it first, and albeit being a little difficult to learn the ins and outs of, is a very powerful program. I highly suggest it.

What kind of objects do u want to model?
Organic (characters, aliens, living beings) or non-organic (product, vehicle, architectural, industrial etc.)

I have use 3Ds Max and Maya, so can comment only on them.

For organic surfaces, Maya has more flexible tools using Nurbs.
But anyway, when u want to add more details, u have to convert everything to polygons.
And I feel the poly tools of 3Ds Max are at par with those of Maya.
in fact, certain edge tools in Max r not there in Maya.

If u r going for product/architectural only, then Maya won't be a good choice, as its more targetted at organics.

Other similar softwares are Cinema4D, Softimage and Lightwave.

There are other new softwares like Modo, which helps u to model very fast.
ZBrush is another tool, that helps to add a lot of details to your characters, very fast.
