I agree with Thewinator, firefox is the best of the lot....And among those that satheesh has given, WinRaR is not actually free but is an evaluation version you need to buy the professional version. So, I don't think that it can be classified as freeware. FileZilla is not used by everyone since most of them do not make FTP uploads/downloads. For instance I started using it only when I started on x10. In my opinion AVG is the best among the four you have given. But it is not the best......

I noticed avg and spybot come by.
You would both want to try:
http://www.hitmanpro.nl/hitmanpro/
It downloads a lot of free anti-spyware software (and some trail versions)
Then controls those to scan your drive one by one.

Oh I love firefox, Its so much safer than IE, and Opera. It has many more add-on's too.
Don't forget to mention that Firefox ís capable of rendering pages according to the w3 standard, whereas IE isn't

Try:-

CCleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com/ - fantastic utility for cleaning all the rubbish files etc off your computer

Openoffice - http://www.openoffice.org/ - full featured FREE alternative for MS Office and IMO much much better.

WebCEO -
[FONT=verdana,arial]http://www.webceo.com now this is a program that is available in three flavours the first 'lite' version is FREE the other two cost quite a bit, it promotes your website, checks keywords, checks your popularity etc, very cool.

These are IMO the best available and I have used all three for a number or years. I also use Spybot 4 and Firefox both of which have already been posted about higher in this thread and also Mozilla Thunderbird as an email client for my X10 email accounts.

While Im here I also use Unstoppable Copier from http://www.roadkil.net/unstopcp.html to recover data from damaged CD/DVD's can usually recover most data especially when windows throws up the 'cyclic redundency error' oh and Avast Home Edition as best free AV software - http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

They call me Mr Cheapskate lol, hope all this helps.:biggrin:pS feel free to boost my rep lol

I'm surprised Threatfire (was Cyberhawk until recently) isn't on this list

It constantly moniters all programs and prevents anything from installing that appears to be a threat to your PC. Their blub goes like this:

ThreatFire™ AntiVirus protects when others can't
PCs are under constant attack from viruses, spyware and identity theft. Every day you hear about a new threat to your PC. They're coming faster than ever before, they're getting harder to stop and traditional antivirus products are not able to keep up.

Will your antivirus software catch the latest malware that just came out today? In most cases, no, because it simply does not know how to detect it yet. But ThreatFire's ActiveDefense technology does, and has proven to provide up to 243% more protection when combined with traditional AntiVirus products.

I would advise anyone that hasn't got it installed, to install it asap, you can read more here http://www.threatfire.com/

PS, I'm not associated with this product in any way, just passing on a lesson learned

Firefox wins hands down, but I have to give it to chougard on pivot stick figure animator that is one of my favorite programs. Pivot is such a great program for killing time and making little stick figure movies.

Being a hobbyist dev on the side, I have to say the Visual Studio Express Editions are among the best dev freeware around. Easy to use, lots of neato features (thank God for the guy who invented debugger pausing), and the Form Designer cuts out half the work.

As for browsers, I only started using FF because I use a script on one of my userfiles on Wikipedia, and it won't work with IE. FF is definitely easier, but I really did get kind of attached to IE and Live Toolbar, so yeah.
