I changed my domain name to end in .com and neither the original website or the new site exist.
Is there like a 24 hour delay in these kind of things?

How did you change the domain name?
Did you register the new domain name?
Example:
If I wanted to use abcd.net AND abcd.com I would have to register each of those domains seperately.
Assuming that you did all of this properly, propagation can take up to 72 hours during which time your domain may work one minute and be down the next.

Choose a different domain name.

Because this domain is owned by another user.
