Confused about directory

Why do i have a www and a public_html directory? Which one do I upload to to post on my site? I delete index.html out of one it dont work. I put it back in and delete index.html from www and it dont work. but if both index.html are in www and public_html it will work. Whats the reason for both directorys?

Also, how can I add CNAMES in cpanel? or does an admin have to do it for me?

Upload your site to the public_html directory> It also makes it a lot easier if the files are not in a folder. Meaning your index.html will be in like this /home/name/public_html/index.html.

I need to add a CNAME for mail to point to ghs.google.com

No i allready changed my MX records and am using Google apps to use my mail and it works fine. like my email is josh@ultimatevelocity.net. I am trying to add a CNAME alias for the login page. Look at my new post I added more detail on it. By the ways thanks for the last response.
