I am a photographer and, in addition to my gallery space, I need a space to upload low-res images via FTP, and be able to link these images freely to other individuals or small groups of people. Currently I'm using another host to this end, however the host is dreadfully inconsistent with regards to uptime and speed so I'm looking for a better option.

The ToS for x10hosting states the following:
* File Hosting Every file on your site must have to do with the website you put up, we are not a file storage service and we strictly prohibit scripts such as torrentflux or rapidleech.

The ToS for x10premium states the following:
3. Content Restrictions
...
While we strive to accommodate all types of sites our shared hosting may not be used for the following:
File or Image Hosting Sites
...

Now, I'd like to know what, exactly, x10 considers to be a file or image hosting site. Is an image hosting site something like moonbuggy or imgur, where any user can upload images for mass viewing, or does an image hosting site constitute a site where the site owner uploads his own images and links them to viewers of his own choosing?

File/Image Hosting generally means sites like Rapidshare, Imagebucket, etc. A good example of a script that wouldn't be allowed would be Chevreto (spelling, I'm not sure I have this 100% right), which is designed to basically clone imagebucket.

For what you have in mind, I cannot see any problems as the files actually have a purpose, and the only person who can upload them is you. If possible I'd try to keep an eye on your disc usage for those images and try to keep it under 1gb, but the rules on paid hosting are a bit more "free" with regards to unlinked files. Since you have a reason for them (they're not just on there for storage, they're there to be displayed to a select few), I would think everything would be fine :)
