Just a question why exactly would you want .png icons in .gif format. PNG is so much better when it comes to transparency quality and well quality of images all together. Don't mean to be rude at all just kinda curious.

They are png? So gif on high quality might still be less...

GIF is less efficient at compression than PNG.
If you want transparency, just used indexed color.
