Email doesn't work

The email account I created in cPanel isn't working properly. I was trying to create a new user in my new Joomla site, but no matter what changes I made to settings I could never get it to send an activation code to the email address I supplied. I then came to the cPanel and went into the email tracing feature and saw that it wasn't receiving the information. It was trying to send the email but didn't have the information to send it to. So I played around with the email account and I can't even send messages from it. It says it sent the message but when I check the email account I sent it to, there's nothing there. I can receive messages though, just can't send them.
