I am sure some have come across this already.
But for those who haven't, these links are to a concept to save energy whilst searching. In theory it works and with the amount of folk that use Google it could save a wack of energy.

Blackle
Darkgoogle.co.za
Darkgoogle.com

I have it set as my standard search. If anything it is easier on the eyes and always makes people look... huh, whats that?

LCDs and recent monitors don't save much energy to display black. This energy saving works with older hardware. It can still help these days but some monitors even use more power to display black (and I think a LCD uses the same power for black or white).

The text is white !
;P
The point is that in my country the goverment is so daft. They have had plans for more power stations for years, but never built them and now we sit with brown outs and no street lights at night. Any little thing I can do to make a difference helps. I just wish people would realize that our global population is rising way beyond what our planet can cope with. The CO2 levels are out of control and we are reducing all finite resources to nothing.
Yes, go on, say that it doesn't affect me and nothing will happen in my life time. Bull, it will and already is. Think back to when you were a lighty (sorry some of you are still), were there such things as uv warnings? The number of people getting skin cancer was minimal.
Its amazing how hectic some of the stats are regarding birth defects and ilnesses.
Edit:
If i am not mistaken (sorry read all about it a while back). The tests were done on LCD's and CRT's !
Edit:
Ok, just checked up.

A 15" LCD uses the same amount to display a black page as a white page.
A 17" LCD uses a little less to display black than white.
There on in it makes a big difference...

This is an amazing idea =0 This could very well kick Google off the market! Which....confuses me, because this Blackle or whatever is a Google search o_O What do they really want to do here?

It is a custom google search. Uses googles engine. The layout might be slightly different, but the main reason for it is that in theory black takes less energy to show on a screen than white. With the amount of users of google, they justified a power saving. Thus the black background.

Sounds interesting. I don't know HOW much energy it'll save, or how significant that number is. But I wish Google allowed you to customize iGoogle to change the background color to black because I use a customized Google homepage with all my RSS feeds and bookmarks on there, so I like to keep using that for my personal reasons.

well, although it's taking the concept of dim lighting into consideration, it really limits us to its usage to during the daytime; i dunno, to me, it'll do some kind of harm (through squinting and not reading in proper lighting) to our eyes. :s

still, interesting.

Hey, I am used to bad lighting. I use it day or night. If you have trouble with seeing the text, click "swithc to classic". Its not classic Google, its an easier on the eyes version which used to be the normal page. Changed a month back.
