Can someone please give me a link to a nice free browser. I was using firefox until it started using 99% of my processor. I used Opera once and it was very slow.

Firefox shouldn't take up much unless you leave it open for days, or open a ton of tabs full of flash. Opera is a good second choice. It shouldn't be much slower.

What are your computer's specs?

You have a much better system than I do, and firefox runs fine here.

How often did it do what you described?

Magicaly started and I could not fix it. Even a full format and reinstall of Windows did not help. I'm afraid something has gone seriously wrong because I can't install AIM anymore as it tells me my computer is not powerfull enough. First my moniter goes bad now my computer.

Well, at least we know firefox isn't the problem then. In the meantime, for AIM, try installing GAIM (gaim.sf.net)

Firefox does have occasional memory leaks (my system hanged for a bit and required a manual shut down).. hey Chougard, maybe some of your hardware fried somewhere along the line..

IF some of my memory fried, shouldn't it have reduced the totat memory? I just removed all of my memory, dusted the computer and inserted the memory again. At this time I have 324 mb of memory free.

Have you tried low-level formatting your hard-drive to make sure it's totaly clean cause data can be still pulled back-up from a normal format, try a low-level format that should clear up the problem otherwise its a hardware problem.

Opera is not slow. It's actually much faster to start up than Firefox and doesn't use as much memory.

I believe that I formated my drive while installing Windows. I told it to delete the partion and then do a full format on it. Would that be a low-level format?

Opera works extremely fast for my computer. I still use it whenever I don't need all my firefox extensions and I just want to go online for a few minutes. I recommend Opera, if you don't like Firefox. It also pains me to mention IE 7, but it seems to be a popular alternative... I guess.

No this is not a low-level format.
To do a low-level format you have to use a floppy.
The maxtor low-level foramt disk is called "POWER MAX" i have this and have tried it on most HD so try it with yours.

If you want add me to msn and ill help you through it.

skater_229@hotmail.com

or download it from here and do it yourself http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/M...oftware Downloads/All Downloads&downloadID=22

A low level format did wonders. Fixed alot of problems. I was afraid I would have to search forever for the maxtor floopy (last time it took me hours) but it was on the floor right infront of my computer. Started formating at 2pm. That finished at 11:30pm. Currently installing windows updates at 1:28 pm. Why can't windows install the service pack 2 and updates DURING installation?

Microsoft product. They'll never do thing the easy way - I can't even get my xp cd to boot.

I end up installing 98se then upgrading to XP over 98, which is just lame.

If memory serves though there is an option to connect to the internet DURING setup and download all the updates, but I don't know if that does SP2 or not - my disc has sp2 already on it.
