I've found the performance of the free hosting to be range from mediocre to terrible. Sometimes any kind of database communication, even very simple ones, take a second or two, which I can live with. Sometimes they take 20 to 30 seconds, which will not work for my purposes. I see that there's a service alert for free servers from several weeks ago, (approximately when I first signed up) but there's no updates there, and I'm not sure if this is still in effect or not.
Is this normal behavior for free servers, and if it is, how much better are the paid ones? Right now I'm still building my site and don't really need lightning-fast responses, I just need to see when my code works and when it doesn't. If I ever get done and want to actually make use of the site though, I'm going to need it to be quicker.
