ftp connection timed out

Hi there,

I see there are some posts on ftp connection problems. Still haven't resolved mine though...

Basically it all connects fine... and then I consistently get this:

Command: LIST
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing

I am using FileZilla.

Ok, try now and tell me if you're still having this issue.
If you are still having the issue, tell me if it's in a specific directory or if it's in any directory.


Remember that you should use the following info to login to your FTP:

Host: starboy.x10hosting.com
Port: 21
User: Same as your cPanel user.
Password: Same as your cPanel password.

Hi. Thanks for the response. Yes I am still having the same issue. I guess it is happening in every directory? I don't get to choose a directory graphically to see. Below is the full list of messages I receive on attempting to FTP in. As you see, I seem to be able to connect fine. And my authentication details seem fine.

I tried restarting the FTP server, can you try now?

How long does it take for the Connection timed out error to come up? Does it come up right away when you connect?

sure... same error.

I count roughly 18-20 seconds for that error to pop up after the line "Command: LIST"

.. and just to be sure it ain't filezilla.. I tried FireFTP and same result... well the latter just hangs.

Hi Corey. I take it you got my PM.. with all the details.

yesterday I could see a directory listing of '/'. However, any attempt to access sub-folders failed.

and today.. the listing fails completely again. i.e. back to the very 1st post in this thread.

I used Windows Explorer and I can get into your FTP fine. Can you try it that way?

You use windows explorer? Are you talking about Cpanel? Or an ftp url like...

ftp://ftp.starboy.x10hosting.com/

that fails anyway.

I would really rather use something like FileZilla... have you tried that app?

I use windows explorer for FTP sometimes as it has minimum settings and usually always works.

I just used FileZilla, used the info in your PM and I was able to connect fine.

fascinating. Thanks. Well I still get the same error.. so it seems like there is a problem on my side? I guess I'll see if I can access another computer somewhere else sometime and see if I can duplicate the error.

Try to access on another computer. I'm almost sure that the problem is on your side.

If you still have problems to login using another computer, re-open this thread or create a new one.

So I tried using Windows Explorer.. and I got a friend to try at her work (i.e. diff computer and diff network).. and we both get the same error.

We both used the url:

ftp://starboy@starboy.x10hosting.com

and then got a password request... and then both got that same screenshot.

hmm, I'm still able to login fine both from my home and the office.

Try doing ftp://74.86.133.24 with windows explorer, when the first error comes up go to File, Login As and put in your info.

Weird... sounds like it may have something to do with ISP's here in Australia?

It could be. It's definitely not a problem on our end.
Try to access using a Proxy.

I'm not sure how to access it via a proxy. I'm kinda over it.. I'm quite happy with CPanel..

actually I'm wondering whether I have a firewall or something that is only partially allowing ftp connections. I'm using Win XP.. I've messed around with the firewall settings.. but it makes no difference.

Do you have any/know any ftp servers I can test my ftp client on? Something that we know works... some public often accessed ftp site?

I'm not really sure.... you could try signing up with another free host and testing. That would probably be the fast\easiest.
