G-Zip Compression?

Hi,

Im wondering if there is a way to enable gzip compression on a website hosted using free shared hosting. I know there is a way if you have access to the web server settings. But since we don't have access to them, is there a way to write some code in an html file or something that would enable gzip compression?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is probably some redundancy in this, but create a .htaccess file in public_html with the following:
