Original artilce from http://adobewhatisit.com . If you feel you can write articles for the good of others, then you are welcomed as an author.
Now the article is a bit long, but if you promise to read through it, I can assure you that you will be using the internet more constructively.
Internet has lots to offer, almost everything. There also are many things on the internet that are focused on teens. Good as well as bad. That’s because, teens are using internet a lot these days, which doesn’t surprise me. Here are some interesting stats:
There are a total number of 19,71,000 people worldwide using internet connections (Wikipedia). Around 35% of internet users are teens while an estimated 90% if these 35% teens, don’t know how to use internet, in its true sense. You think you know it, let’s see if this paradigm of yours is maintained after reading my words on safe, genuine and proper internet usage. If you promise to read this write-up word by word, then I can promise you that this will help you build a proper paradigm.
Let me tell you that you are extremely lucky to have an internet connection. Internet can prove to be an asset which distinguishes you from any other teen. It might be the thing, with which you can get an upper hand.
To start with, let me start by comparing the time that idiot box(TV) consumes with that by a computer. If they call TV idiot box, then I’ll like to call computer as “Sword.” Reason being, the sword is double edged.
“While you are destroying your mind watching the worthless, brain rotting drivel on TV, we on the internet are exchanging freely and openly, the most inhibited, intimate, and yes, chocking details about our ‘config.sys’ settings.” – Dave Barry (American Writer/Humorist) .This quote says what you can expect in this write-up.
(1) The Internet isn’t bad at all, it is good.
(2) Although it’s good, there are some elements that aren’t good as well.
(3) And yes, there are many things to explore.
Also, the point that the idiot box is time wastage is illustrated clearly by the quote by Mr. Barry. Indeed, there are news channels and other channels which are highly informative as well as constructive. But how often do teens (you) watch those? Let me ask you a humble question, as a teen myself. What is the % you watch a TV channel which is constructive, in a month, of the total time you spend watching TV. For instance, if you watch TV 10 hours a day, and if you watch say discovery channel for about an hour a day, then you watch 30 hours of discovery per month out of the 300 hours you watch TV(Your answer should be 10%). Essentially, you waste 270 hours in probably nothing. Write down your answer, be honest). I can guarantee that your % if you were honest enough would be less than 50%. 50% is a little too much, but I am considering teens who like watching innovative and constructive channels. Now I am not saying that entertainment and other things should be ignored, but limits should be defined. We will come to that when we discuss entertainment.
For now, you spend half or less than half of your time for something which should be on high priority. Anyways if have got a % above 30 %, then I can actually guess which type of channels you have taken into consideration. You possible have included news channels, and that’s absolutely fine, but news channels nowadays:
1. AIR nonsense celebrity gossips 20% of their time.
2. Accept bribes, and then focus on just a particular topic, which might even be false.
So, the next time you see a news channel over appreciating or focusing on a particular issue, bear in mind that there is a possibility that, they have accepted a heavy bribe. Also while watching TV, we don’t have our own freedom. We are forced to watch what is shown to us. This obviously, is a waste of time.
Now we come to the computer (with internet connection), which in a situation like this, saves some decent time. You are not even cutting off your time allotted for relaxation and entertainment as well, because you are not wasting time watching and reading unwanted things. It is said that over doing anything is not good. But I disagree as far as positive internet usage is concerned. Trust me or not, but it isn’t boring at all. We will discuss some websites as well, when we come to that part.
I think we have had enough talking about TV. Up till now it should be very clear that TV charges a heavy toll of our time. Alright now let’s move onto a computer. As mentioned before, it is a double edged sword.
Let me get onto the point without wasting any time. There are some bad and sad addictions here as well. I have grouped those into bad and worst (Addictions). Ill begin with the bad ones. The reason I am calling these bad, because if these addictions are within the limits, then they aren’t bad. In fact they aren’t addictions at all. They fall into the category of entertainment and relaxation. The straight forward example of this category: Facebook and other social networking sites.
Your parents must have had scolded you for chatting on Facebook or at least they must have prescribed limits for ‘facebooking’. Let me make it very clear, as a teen and as a 5 year Facebook user, FACEBOOK ISNT BAD AT ALL. It is up to you how you use it. This should help you understand.
Chatting isn’t bad, but chatting every minute while using internet and consequently every day, is bad.
Sharing pics isn’t bad, but clicking pics just for sharing is bad and even worse, always carrying a camera almost everywhere you go, just to update your profile pic with ‘hot’ pics…. Bad.
“What do you do on the internet if not facebooking?” Now this is a common question people ask me. I will come to that in a while.
For this moment, continuing with bad things, here are some common examples:
· Watching absolute waste videos like ‘how to flirt’, ‘how to bunk history lectures’, ‘how to lie’ etc.
On a more serious note, as the worst things should be completely avoided. It isn’t difficult to recover from bad things but if you are into a worst one, then you are in trouble but wait, it can take some time, but you can recover. It depends upon how clear you are. I’ll help you in this.
· Watching adult videos. (You know what I mean if you watch one of these, no referring to horror ones). “The trouble with the internet adult videos is that its replacing masturbation as a leisure activity” – Patrick Murray
Alright, yes it is there on the internet and I am aware of these videos. But you have to control, come what may. I know your reply would be, get real mate, it isn’t as simple as reading this article. Agreed, you’re correct. It is a brutal addiction. Even though you know it is wrong, even though your mind knows that it is a bad thing, still when nobody is at house that same mind of yours convey the message to your hands to click on such adult material.
Let me help you overcome this. I have preferred to stay away from these, right from when I came to know about the existence of such materials. Today, I am proud of my decision. That commitment was so strong, really strong. That’s the power of commitment.
Even now it isn’t late at all. If you are in such a thing, try this: This technique is usually used by parents to protect their child from such evil things, but I have modified it so that it can be self-help things. To leave such an addiction, first you will need to prepare your mindset and you should be clear that it is bad. Once you are ready and know exactly why you want to leave it, then just write down in a piece of paper(might be a notepad you go through every day), what would happen once you have quitted this addiction. Write down what mental satisfaction will you achieve. Write down how proud you will feel after overcoming this addiction. Also write how much humiliating it would be if by chance any member your family catches you red handed. Once you are done writing, follow this.
I hope you know what a browser is. Well that’s the software with which you browse the internet. It should be chrome, Firefox, internet explorer, opera, safari etc. I prefer Firefox, and I suggest you to have chrome or Firefox. These are modern browsers and are superlight and superfast. You are likely to have internet explorer as it ships with windows.
Then locate the extensions settings, it might also be called as add-ons or add INS etc. Anyways, search it for an extension which blocks specific websites. There are a lot of these available for multiple browsers. Download the extension which best impresses you and with its help block the site you visit to watch pornographic content. You might say that, “My addiction is so strong, I will turn the blocker off, it is just a matter of clicks anyways.” I have a decent idea. In some extensions, you may also set custom block messages. Now what I made you to write a few minutes ago, that’s going to come into action. Type those inspirational words in. Now the next time you visit the site, you will be shot by these powerful words. Again just commit, rest assured, you will quit the addiction in no time. You might even cut while writing your custom message. On this note, let me come to the habits that teens should practice while experiencing internet.
Please read further at http://adobewhatisit.com/ as I have exceeded the maximum characters allowed. The recommended sites and habits are next, just a few more words.
Thank you for your co-operation
