Go to https://www.google.com/accounts/SmsMailSignup1 and enter your US phone phone number to recieve a text message from Google! No.... You get a text message with invite code so that you can go onto the internet on a computer and insert the code, then get a free gmail account.

I think everybody is aware of this, there are many threads about gmail. And you need to have a US Cell Phone.
