Getting free software to make a game

One I've tried before that is Ok if you just want to make simple games is Gamemaker (http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker). I haven't tried it for ages so I can't really remember what it's like.

A decent start, if you have the willpower to actually learn it, would be Dev-C++ + SDL. Try to google for it.
