I am wondering if its possible to use the google apps service and have it linked to the domain account here.

Google apps requires manipulation of the cname record to take control of email sent through the domain name.

Yes you can .Login to Cpanel ->Simple DNS editor .
There you can add Cname record
You can also add MX entries in your Cpanel .Its in Mail Section
