Still, don't most plants, especially coal plants still run at full capacity, even when demand is less for only a short time? In all seriousness, if people do want to clean up the air, buy cleaner cars and ground some planes.

Ever heard of net metering? Most states have passed laws saying that if you produce surplus power through renewable means, the power company must buy it from you. It's quite interesting, actually, because it means that you don't need to keep batteries in your home to store all that, the meter just runs backwards. My guess is the payout is a little on the low side, but it's pretty good for just sitting under a solar roof. Wish I lived a green life at these times :).

I've heard of that, not sure if there are any homes near me that do that though.

I've signed up on earth hour to switch off lights at the time. It's cool that more and more programmes like this are getting world wide attention almost instantaneously. Not like some years back where the information spreads slowly.

I will be doing this tonight because I think the more people that do it, the more it looks like people care

However I agree that a better way to change things would be for us to use our cars, planes etc less (I don't drive anyway so I don't feel guilty about burning petrol in a car)

Cool......but Google forgot about the power their millions of servers (I think it's that many, it might be in the hundred thousands) eat every day. Surely one company doesn't need quite so many......

I know that my university leaves the computers on 24/7. When you're finished, the standard shutdown/log off menu items are gone and instead, I have to run their own script that I guess deletes customisations etc., logs off, and then restarts.

At least they're replacing the old machines with new one with flat panels, etc.

IMO this whole thing is a publicity stunt, and in a moment of cynicism, I'd say it's a governmental ploy to make it look as though they're doing something good. Nobody trusts the government, ergo, this is a pointless act ;)

More to the point, however, what good is one hour out of 8,760 in a year? That's, like... 0.0001%! It's not even a baby-step in the right direction...

Hey, that does bring up another fact. I believe the internet causes 20% of the pollution that is going on right now today... not sure if that's true though, but that's what I've heard before.

Its funny.
Turn off your lights for one hour ... but all those electrical appliances you have plugged in, even when turned off are still using some form of power. Best bet, hit the breaker switch and kill the power to your entire house for an hour. ( Then, you aren't using ANY power for that time period )

Instead of doing it just for this one hour, try to do better with having lights on when you don't need it, turn off the TV if you are going to another room for a long period of time.

I have a tiny lamp I use at the computer, and turn off any other lights that aren't in use.

Yeah, I typically keep the lights off whenever possible as it is anyway. It keeps the room a little bit cooler which is nice. So I pretty much Earth Hour most hours anyway, except for the computer.
