This really gets me frustrated! Yesterday I came across a website that has an online forum so I wanted to bookmark and follow a few topics of when someone posts to the thread however in order to follow the topic account registration is required, which that is totally understandable. I click on the registration link, fill out the registration form and answer the verification question. Then the next step is to verify the email address by clicking on a verification email, then they say the account must be manually approved by an administrator, which I think at this point is a bit overkill. I think having somebody answer a verification question and then clicking on an activation email is more than enough. So I wait until the account is activated by a moderator/admin Since you cannot do anything with the account until the account has been approved.
about 12 hours later, I returned back to the form to enter my username and password, and I see that my account has been suspended for spamming. It is impossible for my account to be spamming when you cannot do anything with the account unless the administrator approves the account. The message says that if this is an error, contact the board administrator by filling out some form so I got to click on the form and of course, since the account is suspended, you can’t access the form not will the site let you logout either, so I had to completely clear my browser, history, cachet, or use a different web browser to fill out the contact form. A few hours after filling out the contact form, letting them know that this is an an error they respond by saying “Rejected because of the e-mail address”.
Prior to registering with the website, I carefully read their terms, privacy policy, and it’s pretty much the same like with any other website that you cannot spam, can’t post things that are copyrighted unless you have written consent from the copyright owner, etc.
when I decided to register with this website I used for example x10hostingdotcom@website.tld <—— would be replaced with the actual website and my actual domain name but for illustration purposes, I’ll use this.
The reason why I choose to use an email like this is first it keeps my account information safe so if let’s say this website had a data breach. The email address is only tied to this website instead of using abc123@gmail.tld for all websites, the hacker would then be able to try to use this email address for other websites like Facebook, X formally known as Twitter, etc that can help the hacker find more info, this also is way for me to be able to keep track of which websites I visit and if I need to reset the password it’s easy for me.
I sent them an email asking them what’s wrong with the email address so I’m curious to see what they will say. I think to simply reject somebody simply based on an email address without doing any wrongdoing further more without anything prohibiting that you can cannot use a certain type of email or structured in a certain way isn’t very good business.
I could see using a username that could be easily confused with an administrator, moderator, or someone with privileges where it could easily be confused, but as far as an email address, this is usually kept confidential and only used for limited reasons such as been limited to resetting, sending out newsletters or other important information regarding the site or the account. So even if someone chose an email address, for example admin@website.tld this would not be seen by anyone unless you choose to make it public which I wouldn’t.
