another great thing is that the media (cd form) will be cheaper than your normal cds and dvds.. and they're cheap enough already!

the only thing thatll be expensive is the drive to play it IMO

hi josh,

you can download the quicktime movie player from the apple site at www.quicktime.com. It allows you to download the iTunes program as well. This then allows you to view quicktime movie formats.

btw, how come you get a cool row of red dots while the rest of us only has a single green dot?

They said they don't use quicktime ;D
But yeah that's just... CRAZY. I can't imagine how many other things we would be able to do.

haha i beg your pardon jensen, but itunes SUCKS
as for me, i stuck with quicktime 6, knowing 7.0 would go down the crapper with itunes
qt6 isnt that bad of a player.. yes i prefer windows formats but many sites i visit use .mov's..
i should find a movie converter

but to summarize, they talk about how holographic data storage utilizes lasers to store data in depth, rather than surface wise like current cd/dvd burners. it talks about how much data they can store, i.e. 1000 floppies worth of data in the space the size of a fingernail!

they explain how the lasers work to create the data, etc
they show a working model of their drive in action too!
to visually explain it, its like a floppy disk that has the proportions of a cd; the slip opens up and exposes the holographic data cd to the lasers to generate images, text, etc.

its pretty cool! this is definitely the future!

Old thread, but there is an update on the issue regarding holographic data storage; it will be released this Christmas! http://reviews.cnet.com/4531-10921_7-6625003.html?tag=cnetfd.sd

Too bad the player costs $15,000 US and 300 GB discs will cost $120-$180 :eek4:

Man that is a lot of storage though, expecting 1.6 TB by 2010, my hard drives are like 1/2000 of that.
