hosting question

ive been wondering about this question for a long time:
ok so if some wants a website they go find a host. but how does the host get hosted? do they host themselfs or use another host?? is there some chain on never ending hosts??/

Most of the big hosts have dedicated servers they rent from server companies. Some actually outright own the servers that are in Datacenters.
Smaller companies will use VPS ( Virtual Private Servers ) ... and even smaller will become a reseller and just partner with a company that owns / operates the servers.

And also, some very few companies may actually own the data center rather than a couple of servers there.
