How to make abstract renders?

Hey, I was wondering how people make those really cool 3D abstract renders where its kind of ahem pointy like the stuff in the banner at this site:

anyway, Im using Bryce 3D and Blender 3D and was wondering if anyone had any tutorials or links to tutorials on how to do something like that...

That can also be done using brushes you can find on various websites. Cinema4d renders are typically used by more experienced graphic designers.
