I have recently purchased a .com domain. I have tried adding it in cpanel as both a parked domain and addon domain. In both cases it works - but redirects to my free x10host subdomain: mywebsite.x10host.com

I would prefer if: mywebsite.com was displayed rather than mywebsite.x10host.com

I've read that it is no longer possible to remove the free subdomain and replace with your own 'MAIN' domain. Is there no way with x10hosting to have an different domain show as the primary domain and not show the x10host subdomain?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.
Paul.

If you had added it as an addon domain just fine then it should be doing what you're wanting it to do.
Have you got any redirect set for the domain?

Ahh yes, sorry - there was a redirect created at some point left over - I removed that and now it shows mywebsite.com in the browser! Thanks :) Any ideas whats my best option for search engine optimization. I already have mywebsite.x10host.com showing up in Google. Will mywebsite.com now also show up as a duplicate site? Is there a way so google only recognizes mywebsite.com and ignores the subdomain?

I have a google webmaster console set up for mywebsite.x10host.com and have just created a new one for mywebsite.com. But I really don't want google seeing them as two separate sites.

You can add the sub-domain as a site and request removal.

Do you mean update my robot.txt to block indexing of mywebsite.x10host.com ?

My understanding is that the site is still essentially hosted on x10host.com - and mywebsite.com simply redirects to the subdomain. If I block/remove mywebsite.x10host.com will mywebsite.com still get indexed by google?

You can add the *.x10host.com sub-domain, store the Google index file thingy (proof) on the document root, and send a removal request to Google. This won't exclude the TLD you have from their index and the sub-domain you're not wanting should go within a couple of days.
