Hurricane Rita upgraded to Category 5 storm

CTV.ca News Staff

Bearing down on the U.S. Gulf Coast, Rita has intensified to the top of the hurricane scale. Packing maximum sustained winds of 265 km/h, the massive storm is now rated as a Category 5.

The storm's status was upgraded by the U.S. National Hurricane Center on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, with the potentially deadly hurricane tracking across the Gulf of Mexico, residents of New Orleans and several Texas cities were placed under mandatory evacuation orders. The order extends to about 1.3 million people in the two states.

Houston Mayor Bill White called for residents in low-lying areas of his city to "begin making their evacuation plans" ahead of Rita's arrival.

Without enough government vehicles to evacuate everyone in the affected areas, White urged friends and neighbours to help each other out.

"We need the citizens who are the first line of defence to do your job and actively look for those who need assistance," he told reporters.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered for New Orleans and the Texan county of Galveston and Corpus Christi shortly after Rita was upgraded to a Category 4 storm -- the same intensity as Hurricane Katrina when it devastated the Gulf Coast last month.

At a briefing in Washington, acting U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency director David Paulison underscored the seriousness of all the warnings.

"I strongly, strongly urge Gulf Coast residents to pay close attention to this storm. It's already a Category 4, a huge storm, it's in warm waters and there's a potential for it to increase more," the acting FEMA chief told reporters.

"You have to be prepared to take care of your families," he warned.

Meteorologists fear that Rita could grow even more intense as it travels across the warm waters of the gulf. FEMA, Paulison added, is making an "extraordinary effort" to coordinate preparations for Rita's anticipated landfall.

"We are comfortable that Texas is going to be ready for this storm. It's a big storm, it's not going to be fun, but we're comfortable that we're doing all that we can do take care of residents," he said.

GALVESTON, Texas (CP) - Traffic came to a standstill and gas shortages were reported Thursday as hundreds of thousands of people in the Houston metropolitan area rushed to get out of the path of hurricane Rita, a monster storm with winds of 265 kilometres an hour.

More than 1.3 million residents in Texas and Louisiana were under orders to evacuate to avoid a deadly repeat of hurricane Katrina.

Dan McTeague, parliamentary secretary for Canadians abroad, said there are about 30,000 Canadians in Texas at any given time. He said efforts were underway to contact 175 permanent residents who have registered with consular officials in Dallas. The Category 5 storm weakened slightly Thursday morning, and forecasters said it could lose more steam by the time it comes ashore late Friday or early Saturday. But it could still be an extremely dangerous hurricane - one aimed straight at a section of coastline with the country's biggest concentration

WRAPUP 9-Texas awaits Rita catastrophe, New Orleans floods

By Kenneth Li

PORT ARTHUR, Texas, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Texas officials warned of catastrophe and an already devastated New Orleans suffered renewed flooding as weakened levees gave way in the hours before Hurricane Rita's expected strike at the U.S. Gulf Coast.

A chaotic and unprecedented mass evacuation of the region turned deadly when a bus carrying elderly evacuees along a major escape route south of Dallas burst into flames and killed at least 24 people.

"Be calm, be strong, say a prayer for Texas," Texas Gov. Rick Perry said in the state capital of Austin.

Rita was downgraded to a Category 3 storm at midafternoon as its maximum winds dropped to about 125 mph (200 kph). The storm remained headed northwest toward the Texas and Louisiana borders, where it was expected to make landfall early on Saturday.

"A further slow weakening is possible before landfall ... but Rita is still expected to come ashore as a dangerous hurricane," the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Downpours and wind from the storm's edges pummeled the coastline. Heavy rain was blown sideways by strong winds more than a hundred miles inland in Louisiana.

I heard Rita is the third strongest hurricane on record in the USA? Is it true? I know Andrew which hit the US in the 70's is the strongest one. What was Andrew's maximum wind speed? I want to know.
