OK.

So I wanted to start a site that could be profitable for me without eating up too much of my budget. So I was thinking, "What does every webmaster want?". Then I thought, "I know! A domain!"

But not everyone can have a domain. Either they don't want to fork up the cash, or have no connections/ideas. So then I thought, "Nobody likes having to type in long urls, so why not make a subdomain distributor!"

And thats my plan. I will buy domains and then have a site where you request a subdomain. Sorta like www.shorturl.com.

I need ideas for domains (short ones) that you would use as a subdomain for YOUR site. Please make sure they are available before you post them by checking at www.whois.com.

Hmm I always feel like if I enter one I want at whois and its available it will suddenly become 'unavailable'.... Actually, thats EXACTLY whats' happened to every good name I've whois'd. Within days it's suddenly taken AND whois is trying to sell it to me..

Dont do it!

Use GoDaddy for the whois, there are some companies that will buy everyname you type in and try to sell it to you.

A Subdomain redirector service aint that bad of an idea even though there are already alot alot alot of em around the net so getting people to use might be a bit hard but having catchy domains will attract different people like gfx designers, web coders and other people. A good domain name is thegfx.net for gfx designers.

Offtopic:

Haha they would be stupid enough to buy 3,000 names you type in and try to sell it to you and end up not selling lmfao

A member here "clement" wanted a domain "clementluvseileen.com" or something similar... he typed it in on a whois and the next day it was registered... you can't tell me that's a coincidence :)

So should I do it or does anybody else have any ideas that could make money that I could start?

Well I don't think it's a good idea. Like some people said, there are too many of these services.

Also, how would you make money? If you are talking about putting ads on, don't even think about it. All the good short URL redirectors have no ads at all. (http://tinyurl.com/, http://shurl.org/advanced, etc.) If ads wasn't how to make money, how would you?

he could have the ads on his home page...but maybe you should think of something that not many sites have...or you can just buy me streetdesignz.net and just give it to me for a present since my b-day is up soon ;)

Hmm, this I am not sure of. I know you can get .NAME domains, but I was never quite sure what they where used for. You can probably find the answer on http://ICANN.org/

The applications ended last year... One applicant wanted a www.youname.asia and another www.youname.mail and another www.youname.xxx .... Strange but true...

To get a TLD, you need to part with 25,000 dollars or 2,500 dollars but im sure it is 25,000 $....

i have just read it...

Wow. If I had $25,000, I know I wouldn't spend it on a TLD, lol. But if I did, I'd probably it the TLD .host. What would you get?
