If I add an addon domain can I have a seperate website?

The way cPanel handles add-on domains is that it creates a subdirectory of public_html and you put the files for your add-on in there. So your description is correct. The domains point to different content.

Technically, if you added child.com and put the files in public_html/child , you could access the files via parent.com/child , but if that is a worry, you can add a line in .htaccess to prohibit this.

If you add the new domain as a parked domain, that is when the files are the same.

And lastly, the rule is that you are only allowed one Free Hosting Account per person.
