Well with Microsofts recent release of Zune. I would like to know what you would rather have.

Heres just some small stuff on both items:

-----------------------------------
ZUNE - http://www.zune.net

zunes2.jpg

Zune has Videos, Pictures, Music, Radio, and some more cool features. ANd am pretty sure videos dont need to be in Mpeg4 and cna take all formats.

---------------------------
Ipod - http://www.apple.com/ipod/ipod.html

There are Ipod Videos, Nanos, Minis, and regular Ipod.
They can have Pictures, Videos, Music, and addins can be bought for radio, and more.

If I had to pick, definitely the Zune. It has much more future functionality/capability in store.. iPod is pretty.. bland.

Personally I use a Creative Zen Vision: M, it's a GREAT music and video player.. battery life is amazing!

"Regular, low budget MP3"

It would've been better if you had just put "other". There are actually some other portable audio players that cost more than the iPod or Zune.

I don't have (and have never owned) a portable audio player, but the Zune and iPod would be my last choices since neither of them are able to play Ogg Vorbis files. The iPod can, if you install iPod Linux on it, but I'd rather just get a player that has the functionality by default and probably will last a lot longer.

I like the iPod because of it's simplicity. It basically started the handheld mp3 revolution.

Technically Creative started it. After all, Creative did INVENT the actual mp3 player.. which is why Creative won its lawsuit against Apple, and earned $100 million in damages. Anyway, it was only Apple that realized the actual monetary potential of the mp3 player, hence the huge advertising campaign.

Actually, Creative did NOT come up with the MP3 player idea. Even if they did, it was NOT the reason for the lawsuit.

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Digital_audio_player&oldid=112602642):
"The first digital audio player in the world was created by South Korean SaeHan Information Systems in 1997 (acquired by iRiver in 2004). The MPMan F10 was later OEMed to the American market through Eiger Labs."

The first mass-produced MP3 player was the Diamond Rio.

Creative only patented the interface for the MP3 player. When Creative sued Apple, Apple settled the lawsuit for $100 million, and Creative became a "Made for iPod" member.

I'd go for the iPod--the Zune is too DRM-infested for my tastes. Plus, the Zune is available in brown. Eww.

What is an Ogg Vorbis file?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorbis

Brief summary of Wikipedia article:

Vorbis is an open source, lossy audio codec project headed by the Xiph.Org Foundation and intended to serve as a replacement for MP3. It is most commonly used in conjunction with the Ogg container and is then called Ogg Vorbis.

Licensing

The Xiph.Org Foundation states that Vorbis, like all its developments, is completely free from the licensing or patent issues raised by other proprietary formats such as MP3.

Ogg Vorbis is supported by several large digital audio player manufacturers such as Samsung, Rio, Neuros Technology, Cowon, and iRiver.

-- end brief summary of wikipedia article --

Many GNU/Linux distributions do not include support for playing MP3 files by default due to it being proprietary and non-free (according to the Free Software Foundation's definition of Free Software). (This doesn't have much to do with DAPs. I just thought I'd throw it in for fun.)

I'd prefer a regular low budget MP3 player. Doesn't scream at passerbyers to "Steal Me!" and besides, once everyone has an iPod, your lower budget MP3 player stands out more LOL

I love my Zune, and now that they're making Linux for it, it's going to kick even more ass :p.

I'd go with Apple. Microsoft Zune is way to DRM minded for my tastes.

Anyone seen the new iPhone by Apple? it looks SICK :)
