Is life futile, or does it have a purpose?

Basically, when it comes down to it, we all die, our family always die, and probably not too incredibly far off from now, the human race will undergo extinction. Yet we long for something eternal.

So do you think there is purpose to human life, or are we just organized matter that means nothing in the long run?

I believe that I am here to spread my Savior's love and to bring people to the only true God.
I am a Christian so I believe that after this life I will enter Heaven.

I do believe that the earth will come to a end at some point. I'm looking forward to that time.

We are not "organized matter that means nothing in the long run". Look at how complex everything is. How could it just happen? Evolution makes absolutely no sense. If you go deep in and try to find proof, you will find NOTHING that is solid proof! In fact, you'll find proof that there is a Creator!

Life is what you make it. Everything is solely based on science; give us time and we'll find out how we were created, how we evolved, and how to increase our lifespan

Science and religion always clash, not sure why though. There is a reason/explaination for everything. All things that were said to happen(for instance, a particular someone walking on water), didn't happen on 'miracle'(not doubting such a thing), it more than likely happned through science, but there is no explaination for how. Just as we have found things to be 'impossible' in the past, we always go on later to find out there was indeed a way to do such a thing, so thousands of years from now we might have a much better explaination of everything and maybe one day before this world is destroyed we might uncover the secret to our existence. We might actually figure out how and why we got here.

Why on earth(expression/lol) would there be an entire planet full of life with complex systems and such for no reason?

And while I won't turn this into an argument about evolution, I will say that evolution doesn't really fall into play anywhere. Most scientifical history is theoretical. There is no proof of the past(after a certain point), so we simply say what we think happened. Do you know how many innocent people have been arrested off evidence from this decade? How accurate could we be with evidence that is centuries old? Think about it.

But really, I think that our existence is purely for us. Not in a greedy/selfish way, but we are meant to enjoy our lives and live peacefully, doing as we wish. We were given complete free will and an amazing capacity for learning and growth. We were placed in a perfectly designed world, where everything somehow works with something else and everything relates to everything else in someway or another.

While the world isn't what we call 'perfect', this isn't really any one person's(/being(aka, the 'Creator')) fault. If you are religous than you would know that everything was what we would call 'perfect' a very long time ago(in the begining), but things have changed, thanks to our free will. Some people just freely choose to do things that might affect someone else negatively. We can't control that. That's why it's free will.

So while some will say a life in which you basically have no real goals to accomplish is meaningless, other will see that it is really just about you(once more, not in a greedy/selfish way). If you are happy in the end then it doesn't matter. You lived a perfect life. Whatever you can do to make you happy, that is just up to you. For some, it is doing good and helping others, for others, it might be the oppisite, and for some, it might be to lay around and play WoW all day. It really doesn't matter. We were given the ability to choose what we want. We are here solely for ourselves(for the most part, we actually were given some rules and guidelines, but for some reason not everyone wants to follow them...).

And there is my rant :D

I think everyone who can think clearly thinks that something will happen when you die or whatever, because if there is nothing to look forward to then they would all commit mass suicide :p

Wow, that is extremely grim, but sadly makes some sense. If there truely was nothing after death, then wouldn't this all be pointless? A mass suicide would probably happen if no one believing that there was some form of life after death.

Of course, swirly, don't spread this idea around because then all the people who believe in nothing will hear it and then there will be somewhat of a mass suicide, and it would be your fault:eek4:

Well, I as a muslim, believe that there is life after death and that life is an eternal one. So, you can say you are making your own destiny after death with your deeds.

Life's purpose is what you make it, not what comes to you. If you don't do something about what does come to you, it'll end up as if your existence never mattered, pointless, shouldn't-have-born-in-the-first-place. I guess that's why we punny humans want to build big, be strong and is useful. Everybody wants to leave a mark somewhere, somehow, cos in the long run, whatever that comes after us (be it evolution or extraterrestrial), we all want to be remembered and maybe perhaps, even have a chance to come back through means beyond our own. Life beyond death.

Whatever comes next, beyond death maybe, it all depends on what you're doing in this life, getting prepared for anything, doing something that means something of higher purpose. Cos really, life gives all the opportunity for us to create whatever's necessary for the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the beyond.

Now I am not trying to start an argument, however, there is no proof that there is a creator or supreme being either.

Absolutely nothing in this world that gives 100% proof of a creator. Now I am not devout in any religion and regardless of what I just said, something created us, evolution or otherwise.

On a side note, evolution is plausible. Maybe we didn't evolve from apes but we may of evolved from another specie. But to me, it does not matter, if my ancestors were bacteria, so what. If we were created like we are today, so what. In the grand scale of life, what does it truly matter?

No matter what you hold, nothing as to our creation has been proven and it may never be. If there is a "God" and we die, then what he have heard/believe will be true. But if there is no God and we die, then nothing will matter because we will cease to exist completely.

Now to answer the topic question, life is only futile if the individual deems it to be so. Life is driven by the individual. It does not matter if a person is an atheist or devout in their religion, each person drives their own existence and its meaning.

Instead of debating the point of life, why not go and live it?

Even in debating we are living ;P

I think it would be exactly the oposite, people would want to live longer with knowing there is nothing afterwards.

I think life has purpose, the purpose of it is to create new life (procreate). With out purpose there would be no life.
