I don't think that Silverlight is super impressive, but it is a change to something newer and flashier. But yet again, I haven't seen too many Silverlight sites yet, other than Microsoft's site, so I don't know lol.

Otherwise, Joomla, can't help you, sorry.

Yes ive seen Silverlight in action too. It looks impressive but Joomla has some plugins which offer the same visual effects. I havent got my teeth into Silverlight yet to work out the pro's and cons compared to Joomla plugins.

All very intersting.

Please stay away from Silverlight. As a Windows 2000 owner it is distressing to see applications that push older operating systems to be obsolete. The only applications that make win2k or 98 obsolete come from the MS camp. I hope that web developers especially don't embrace these plugins that are not available for older OS's.

As for Joomla, I don't know. I'm a Xoops user, and feel that it is the best, because it is the one I know. I can't say yes or no about Joomla but I can say... Xoops is good.

Indeed, Microsoft are always trying to push users to their new operating systems by incorporating technologies that require it. A lot of users are still happy with their 98,2k,XP OP systems and are comfortable without the bugs and issues the newer operating systems give them.

The problem is sooner than later web devs must embrace the newer technologies as customers demand require it.

It is distressing... the progression you speak of is the same thing that drives some people to the latest/greatest when the only difference is glitz. What can vista really do that XP can't? What can Silverlight do that flash can't? Back in the day programmers were stuck w/ 64k of memory and had to be elegant in their solutions. Now they package their bloated piece of malware w/ .NET 2.0 and shaped windows in an effort to drive people to their newest release when the only new features are a little sparkle, longer load times and a memory footprint sasquatch would envy.

Customers don't demand it. I think if you do a poll you'll find customers want content. They don't care that the page header is spinning in 3D technicolor. The customers demand it line is inaccurate. Site developers want it. They want it because it's either easier to create their vision, or it just makes them feel good to play with new toys.

Anyhow, that's my opinion! :D

I'm a Joomla user. It is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. About Silverlight, I think it is going to be a disaster. Microsoft has deemed it a competitor for Adobe Flash Player. I can't even think about it.

Silverlights is microsofts answer to stealing your flash. It must be hosted on their servers where as adobe when you create it you own it.

Microsoft is trying to control everything about the web from a web devs angle. They will never succeed.

I use Joomla and it is a very powerful system to use. Like a previous member said, once you get the hang of it you will be pretty amazed at how much you can do with it.

I've never tried Joomla, but I fidled around with Siverlight for a little bit and pretty much came to the conclusion that I would stick to flash. There wasn't anything about it that said "Revolutionary" so much as "Evolutionary". To me, it's just M$'s attempt to keep up with the demand, and as usually, a step too late. I also agree with BentFX: if you're designing a website (as apposed to a web-application), limiting your user base is a poor choice.

After some reading on Joomla via Wikipedia, it seems like a good base for web-development. Give it a try though, you never know what will and won't work otherwise :)

No comments about silverlight, as the same time I should tell Joomla is pretty good among other content management system.
In my experience, I've tried lot of CMS and choose Joomla for a while.
I haven't learned fully about joomla, so I started to hate joomla, later I change into php nuke.....finally I realized joomla is better for my website.

Interesting thing I have learned to create templates for Joomla 1.5.

But I dont know other's opinion about this so I've started a poll here : BEST CMS

I don't know about silverlight, either.

But I used to use Joomla for a little bit. I was reading about how to make themes for 1.5 and it sounds like it's very flexible. I'm planning on redoing my site (even if I just got it running with wordpress, ha) with Joomla and dabbling in making a theme.

Silverlight - No idea therefore it is not correct for me to comment on that. However since have not heard much about it therefore can at least say not very popular.

Joomla - I had tried this out and liked it a lot. Especially range of plugins available as also nearly nice themes available for it. However I got lil bit constraint as there was no native blog module available. Though mojoblog provide that through add on module but some how did not gel well for me.

Drupal - After this I tried Drupal and I was pretty impresse with it as it have all what I wanted. Provide lot of functionality with lot of additional module available for free. Though take little bit of time to get acquinted with it but once you get hang of it, it is fine to handle and provide great scope of enlarging your convass if you want and need to. Plz check out http://TravelExtracts.com/ where that is used.

However at the same time if you are not going to be a power user and will be in single author mode even Wordpress (though it is primarily blog system) provide nearly CMS like capability and at the same time very easy to maintain and update. Check out http://ipo.investorsouk.com/ where I am using Wordpress.

Hope this will help.
