Joomla problems

Hi, i have seen a few threads here with the same problem but none were resolved. I have upgraded to php v2 . Anyway, i am getting 500 internal server errors when trying to use/install joomla. Before upgrading php i was getting suhoshin errors (i cant exactly recall).

Server log:

[Wed Mar 12 01:35:45 2008] [error] [client 203.166.0.23] File does not exist: /home/damianl/public_html/500.shtml
[Wed Mar 12 01:35:45 2008] [error] [client 203.166.0.23] SoftException in Application.cpp:238: File "/home/damianl/public_html/joomla/index.php" is writeable by group

I have taken off the +w permissions as stated in the above error and no luck.

have you changed the permisions on the joomla folders and files. I keep getting a 500 error when trying to access them.
they should all be set to the default 644.
