Try this, but it is a little more than first time user, but is still the basics http://cs3-tutorials.blogspot.com/ and it covers more than just Photoshop, and goes someway to explain a lot of well used functions in all of the CS3 package.

Or just hit google with Photoshop basics and there are lots of interesting bits that pop up.
