ok so i love x10hosting and all but... Im thinking about hosting my own site. but ive noticed that to view my site i have to go to local host... is that just me? how exactly will others access my site? i think i remember it being through like my ip/computer name...? if it makes a diff, im going to install apache and mysql and php on my "server". actually its a old comp thats right now running msdos 5(i have a windows disc so i can put windows xp on there...! i got it from my grandma who never used it.. but i got another comp i can take some parts from...i dont know the specs really on either of them but i just want a clue to if anyone thinks it will be near enough to run my site?? any suggestions? lol if this does not work i will most definatley come back to x10!(although im not exactly leaving yet lol least not till i find out if it works for me...)

Crap...

I would HIGHLY Not prefer that...I have never tried it...But you got to keep your PC up 24/7 and yea I don't think it will be FAST enough!

well a cable connection will have a upload speed of around 40-60 (maybe higher if your lucky) and it will download at that speed... so its much better to buy a server and pay monthly from a datacenter, who have fast servers and a good at least 1gbps connection.

even linux doesnt speed it up much... its not the computers power but your network speed.

I run a server of my own but its rarely up (I'd rather not leave my computer running it all day because I share my computer and it would slow down everybody else's work). To get to it all you have to do is type my IP address in the address bar, no additional "local hosts" or anything. I have it running PHP 5. something: http://68.189.245.249 .

Lol, I'm not going to try... It will be fine unless you screw around with the PHP directories.

i hope he has a good upload speed.

anyways i have my own server. I actually use it for testing stuff and like now im designing a template.

also what you are going to need to do is if you have a router, you are going to need to give your self a static ip and then forward the ports to your computer

port forwarding - http://www.portforward.com/
