I don't know. It's to trick us into forgetting how terrible IE7 was compared to IE6 then pull the rug out from under us when they redesign the UI on IE8 between the last public Beta and the final release.

Well touchwood, Microsoft products give the least amount of problems when installing. I tried Vista Betas and they installed like a gem.

So I am going to try this but not now. I will probably start with Beta 2. But below is some more information for you guys. I found it somewhere and it may be useful for you as it elaborates more on it's features.

Microsoft has put in place the preparations for Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 ready for Mix 08.

A full features page has been revealed which lists the following additions to Internet Explorer:

* Activities
* WebSlices
* Favorites Bar
* Automatic Crash Recovery
* Improved Phishing Filter

Activities allow users to lookup/send information in a right-click contextual menu, such as retrieving an address map from Windows Live Maps, submitting a story to Digg, sharing a page on Facebook etc. WebSlices allows users to crop a specific area section of a site and bookmark it. Improvements have been made to the phishing filter which continues to block known Phishing sites and now blocks sites known to contain malicious software that could harm users’ computer or steal their information.

Perhaps one of the best new features is Automatic Crash Recovery which recovers your tabs if your browser crashes. It is widely expected that Microsoft will release the first beta of Internet Explorer 8 at this years Mix 08 which begins today.

The download is now live and can be installed on Microsoft Windows Vista, XP, Server 2008/2003

What's all the excitement, its just another slightly better looking and pretty useless proprietary browser. IE still can't compare with Mozilla Firefox when it comes to personalising a web browser through add-ons and actual useful stuff, like proper security.

Most of these 'new' features that are being trumpeted have been availiable for Firefox users for ages.

This may save Microsoft from the continued criticism around the world!
Good idea of trying to shift the attention of users.
I'll give it a try!
Edit:
Internet Explorer 8 is designed to work in standard mode out of this box. However, Microsoft provides a way for users to browse the web in a way similar to Internet Explorer 7 by using the emulate Internet Explorer 7 button on the chrome. Learn more.

What does tis mean?

Same here sohailamir, I still have version 6 just because I use Firefox instead. I figure why upgrade and waste valuable space for something I won't even use?

I think I'm fine with Firefox for the moment... I only use IE at all to see how my site looks in it, I might see if it's any better than 7 though which it probably won't knowing Microsoft...

I'll try this in a little while when Beta 3 comes out. Anything below I never install.

I have just installed this, and I think it was a complete waste of time. Not much has changed, there are quite a few things that don't work (Some pages don't render correctly etc. Also the UI still needs a lot of work, there are quite a few area which don't look very nice.

I would recommend that others stick with their current browser for now, unless you really want to test it.

I will be sticking with Firefox.

You're better off installing IE7 for security reasons anyways, even if you don't use it. Many viruses take advantages in outdated browsers in windows, and I have experience with cleaning out those nasty ones that hijack IE6. Time for an upgrade!

Also, ask any IT guy you come across on why they dislike IE6. They're most likely say full of security holes and very unstable. I'm not an IT guy, just a really knowledgable person lol.
