I found it interesting in just this last year that whenever the local (or even national) news reports on a person whom they are unable to reach, they consult that person's myspace page. Odd, isn't it? They even say: We were unable to reach so-and-so for comment but looking at their myspace page... xyz... Well I guess since most people who use myspace post a lot of personal info on the site... including a personal blog, people could mine these myspace pages for information about people.
... A darker side is that a lot of teenagers and adolescents use myspace indiscriminately without thought of their personal safety. I've seen a feature on the news show 20-20 which followed a police officer who specialized in fighting cybercrime. He showed how over the progress of several months, he was able to infiltrate the circles of several teens and even got them to agree to meet him in person... alone. This was, however because the girls were under the impresson that they were meeting up with some cute "college age" guy.
Despite its shortcomings, I'll say that I vote for MySpace. It has infiltrated the net and society in general with its pervasiveness. So many people know about it and so many people use it. It has the gift of *buzz*. Friendster is out there, has nice features but it does not have as much meda or societal *buzz*. People don't talk about it the same way. Another for the bandwagon... *ding*!
