Very simple. I like the links on the left, and the picture of the penguins is fine I guess, but i think you should add a little more color to the background of the content.

I think a gradient would be great. Not sure which colors would look good with that though. Maybe like a light blue to white or something, I don't know.

Yes indeed, it is VERY simple. I kind of don't like how the navigation menu and the news feeds aren't seperated, and the text for the banner is kinda... (not great)

The whole layout makes me feel like it's 1991 or something, no offense.

Just as Chris Z said, it is very simple. I honestly don't like the banner text at all. It just doesn't fit the template. Check this website out for some ideas. It belongs to a friend of mine, she is a professional designer (and has more experience than I do): http://www.my-igloo.net/
